New York Vietnam Veterans Memorial, New York, NY

Located in the Financial District, the memorial is a wall of glass and granite inscribed with selected writings that collectively portray the American experience in Vietnam. The excerpts were selected from more than three thousand letters, diary entries and poems written by Americans during the Vietnam Era. The notion of “the wall” has roots in the long-standing practice of inscribing an edifice with historical events or commemorations of the dead.  In this monument, the writing is not of acknowledged authors or statesman, it is instead the personal thoughts of people communicating directly to those they loved under extreme circumstances.
